Frequently Asked Questions

  • After an initial consultation, we will discuss our plan for treatment. Typically patients are seen weekly or every other week at the beginning of therapy, often shifting to less frequent sessions (monthly or as-needed) as treatment progresses.

  • I utilize a shorter-term, rehabilitative model of treatment in my practice. Essentially, the goal is for patients to start to feel better and increase their functionality as quickly as possible, rather than engaging in a years-long process of psychotherapy.

  • If you already have a psychotherapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist that you currently see for counseling sessions, I do not recommend working with two therapists simultaneously. Exceptions can be made for very targeted treatment on a specific presenting problem.

  • My practice Is often full and I am unable to guarantee when openings will arise. See Practice Information for the current status of the practice (open/closed to new patients). When closed, patients are welcome to send an inquiry through the website to potentially be contacted at a later time, but if you are ready to start therapy now, I encourage you to find a provider with current openings. PsychologyToday is a great resource for finding thearpists in the area

  • Dr. Richardson offers both in-person and telehealth sessions. Research shows that telehealth is an accessible, effective option for psychotherapy appointments. Video sessions are preferable but phone sessions can be offered as needed.

  • If the internet connection is unstable or the session is dropped, Dr. Richardson will call you directly to determine how to proceed. Rescheduling, switching to phone, or discontinuing may be considered.

  • Feel free to reach out for scheduling purposes at any time, and I typically respond within 24-48 business hours. Patients are also welcome to reach out to request an earlier appointment for more support, which I will try to accommodate if I have availability. However, I ask that you save any clinical updates or symptom changes for your session. Crisis/urgent support is not available.

  • I am licensed in Colorado and Virginia. I am also a PSYPACT provider, and can offer virtual sessions to patients in any of these 42 states.
